Board Retreats
Most schools begin the academic year with a
retreat for the school's board. Usually the retreat is held off campus,
often on a Saturday in late August or early September, and is facilitated
by a consultant. Board retreats are held for any or all of the following
reasons:
To confer on goals & objectives for
the new academic year.
The administration prepares the operational
plan for the new academic year during the spring and summer. At the
fall board retreat, the plan is presented to the board in draft form
for discussion, review and ratification.
To involve the board in the planning process.
By seeking additional insight from the board,
the administrative operational plan gains the critical support it needs
from the board to achieve the desired goals.
To generate new ideas and perspectives.
The head of the school and administrative staff
gain the collective wisdom and insight from new perspectives when they
invite board participation.
To provide pre/in-service training for the board.
It is critical that board members are reminded
annually of their roles and responsibilities.
